FITTINGLY, the biggest news of the day in Bomberland was on the offensive line.

Veteran Glenn January, who missed the entire 2010 season with a torn pectoral muscle, beat out fellow import Kelly Butler for the starting right tackle position. January returns to the position he played for Winnipeg in 2009, when the Bombers employed him to protect the blind side of lefty QB Stefan LeFors.

The Texas Tech grad tempered his excitement Saturday.

“At this point all I’ve proven is that I can still play football,” January said after hearing he’s a starter on the Bombers O-line again. “We still need to go out there and win games. It was a lot of hard work (leading) up to this moment.

“I’ve been named the starter — it’s a good feeling,” he added. “But if I don’t get the job done, they’ll find someone else to do it. I’m approaching the season the same way I approached camp — one day at a time.”

For most of June, it looked like the 28-year-old might not be in the mix for any spot on the team. Coming back from a serious injury (and missing a whole season) was an obstacle, and suffering a groin injury prior to the first pre-season game in Montreal only made his prospects for a spot appear worse.

A good performance against Toronto tipped the scale in January’s favour, though, and Bomber coach Paul LaPolice said the 6-foot-6, 304-pound lineman deserved a chance to start in the CFL again.

“He performed very well in camp and he performed very well in the game,” LaPolice noted.

According to the team, Butler will remain in Winnipeg in a backup role. Import Andre Douglas will start at the left tackle spot.
