The Winnipeg Jets are taking their act to The Rock in September – albeit with a slight change of plans.
The Jets, in conjunction with the NHL and the Town of Conception Bay South – winners of the Kraft Hockeyville 2011 Pre-Season game contest — will play an exhibition game against the Ottawa Senators on Sept. 26th with the venue now the Mile One Centre in St. John’s, the future home of Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate.
Conception Bay South officials opted to move the game from their own rink to the Mile One Centre because the capacity is 10 times that of the facility in their town.
“While the pre-season game will be held at Mile One Centre, the Kraft Hockeyville Party will definitely be in Conception Bay South, and only Conception Bay South ” said Conception Bay South Mayor Woodrow French in a statement. “On September 24 and 25, the Town will host the best Kraft Hockeyville Party ever both inside and outside the Robert French Memorial Stadium, all captured by CBC for a special one hour show in September.”
As winners of the Kraft Hockeyville contest, Conception Bay South receives $100,000 in money to use toward renovations to their rink. The community won after being named one of the five finalists from across Canada and receiving almost 1 million votes.
The Hockeyville game is one of seven preseason contests the Jets will play in September. The team opens its schedule on Sept. 20th with split-squad games in both Columbus and at the MTS Centre. The Jets will then play a pair of games each – home and away – against both the Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes. They will host the Hurricanes at MTS Centre on Wednesday, September 28th and then the Predators on Friday, September 30th.
