WINNIPEG — Southwood’s Adrian Kibsey set a hot pace today to earn a spot in this week’s Canadian Amateur Championship at Niakwa Country Club.
Kibsey shot a three-under-par 68 to lead a field of 57 players trying to qualify for this week’s men’s national championship at Niakwa and Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. The 72-hole event begins on Thursday.
Kibsey collected six birdies and had just three bogeys over Niakwa’s 6,622-yard layout today.
He was one of only three players who broke par today in the qualifier.
Also winning a spot in the championship were Tyler Friesen of Winkler and Torrie Coghlin of Saskatoon. Each shot one-under 70.
Willie Mac of Flint, Mich., (71), and Burke Wiebe (72) and Bret Thompson (72) both of Southwood also gained spots into the Canadian Amateur.
The seventh and final entry went to Niakwa’s Taylor Reilly, who bested Selkirk’s Mark Starodub in a six-hole playoff.
Both players finished at two-over 73.
A total of 243 players begin play Thursday at Niakwa and Elmhurst. The cut will fall after Friday’s rounds to the low 70 players and ties.
