Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., rolled in a 10-foot birdie at the 71st hole to take the lead for good and claimed the 107th Canadian Men’s Amateur golf championship today at Niakwa Country Club.
Hughes, 20, shot a one-under-par 70 today and wound up beating defending champion Albin Choi of Toronto by two shots.
The margin was one playing the final hole and Choi three-putted after it didn’t matter because Hughes lagged his birdie putt to within a few inches of the hole.
Hughes’ four-day total was 10-under-par 274. He prevailed after being in a three-way tie for the lead with Choi and second-round co-leader Cory Renfrew of Victoria after 10 holes.
Renfrew, Wilson Bateman, of Spruce Grove, Alta., Corey Conners, of Listowel, Ont., and Jacob Patte, of Oshawa, Ont., all shared third place at seven-under par.
The championship, after being absent from Winnipeg for 15 years, returns in 2014 to Elmhurst.
