The NDP will recruit 2,000 nurses if they stay in government, Premier Greg Selinger said Tuesday at the U of M’s school of nursing.

He said the hiring blitz is needed over the next four years to meet growing demands on the health-care system and more nurses hitting retirement.

Selinger said the plan calls for 100 new nurse training seats at universities and colleges and to cover the training costs for nurse practitoners who agree to work in the north and rural areas for two years.

The plan also calls for $9 million for nurse training over the next four years, part of the $24 million health-care training fund announced earlier in the campaign by the NDP.
