Big picture

Knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champions and hottest team in the NHL in one night would colour most impressed, but consider what the win does in the standings before needling that Bruins fan in the office this morning. Thanks to three straight wins, the Jets now sit alone in second spot in the Southeast Division with 28 points, one ahead of Washington and four up on struggling Tampa Bay. Florida (34 points) still remains on top; Winnipeg is starting to rise.

The Jets (12-11-4) continue to find the right formula in downtown Winnipeg. Tuesday makes it three straight wins at the MTS Centre and eight home wins overall.

Game-breaker

Winnipeg centre Bryan Little avenged a hit from behind on teammate Mark Stuart with the go-ahead goal 4:50 into the third period. That sent the MTS Centre crowd into a frenzy for the rest of the contest. Stuart was hit by Boston’s David Krejci and remained on the ice for a spell but didn’t miss a shift.

★Ondrej Pavelec, G, Wpg. — His name is becoming a regular occurrence in this space. Boston fired 40 shots at the Winnipeg net and the one that got by wasn’t even a clean shot. Pavelec is the reason for this recent Jets hot streak.

★★ Patrice Bergeron, C, Bos. — With leading scorer Tyler Seguin a healthy scratch (he missed a team breakfast), Bergeron had to carry most of the load. A lack of finish from his wingers cost him a few assists.

★★★ Dustin Byfuglien, D, Wpg. — No points on the scoresheet but many good choices out there from No. 33 Tuesday. Most times, Byfuglien is like a referee — the less you notice him, the better his overall game is.

Dreams come true

On Thursday, young hockey players will play a fun game at the MTS Iceplex in recognition of the NHL Players’ Association Goals & Dreams’ donation of 50 sets of brand new hockey equipment to the H.E.R.O.S (Hockey Education Reaching Out Society).

The Goals & Dreams Cup will also include Winnipeg Jet players Eric Fehr, Tanner Glass, Ron Hainsey, Andrew Ladd and Jim Slater who will be on hand to coach the kids.

The game at the MTS Iceplex goes Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
