Defending champion Mike McEwen has the top seed heading into the playoffs at the BDO Canadian Open curling bonspiel.
The Winnipeg skip rolled through the round-robin unbeaten at the second leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling in Kingston, Ont. McEwen polished off pool play in style Friday night with an 8-3 win over previously unbeaten Niklas Edin.
McEwen, who leads the Asham World Curling Tour money list, played it by the book, scoring multiple points with the hammer every time he had it against Edin, who was held to singles when he had last rock. McEwen was the only skip to post a 5-0 record as ran the table in Pool A. Edin, 4-1, also moves into today’s quarter-finals.
Pool B was stacked with talent, so it’s no surprise four of its six teams will keep playing. Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., topped the table at 4-1, but lost his final round-robin game 6-5 to Jean-Michel Menard of Gatineau, Que. Menard scored two with hammer in the eighth to get the win and improve to 3-2, good enough for a spot in today’s tiebreaker.
Menard will face Kevin Koe’s rink from Edmonton and Calgary after Koe lost his final Pool B game 7-6 to Edmonton’s Randy Ferbey.
Koe’s loss, which dropped him to 3-2, opened the door for Kevin Martin to move straight into the quarter-finals. The 2010 Olympic champion took full advantage, beating Robert Schlender 8-3 in an all-Edmonton match. Martin finished at 3-2 as well, but was ranked higher than Koe and Menard and avoided the tiebreaker.
The final three quarter-final berths came out of Pool C, where Jeff Stoughton, Glenn Howard and Rob Fowler all finished tied with 4-1 records.
Stoughton had been perfect heading into Friday’s late draw, but Howard snapped the Winnipeg skip’s winning streak. Howard, of Coldwater, Ont., won a wild 8-6 game in which he scored four in the fourth but gave up three-enders to Stoughton in the third and fifth ends.
Brandon’s Fowler is heading into the playoffs on a roll with four straight wins after dropping his opener to Stoughton on Wednesday.
McEwen will play the tiebreaker winner in his quarter-final, Jacobs plays Howard, Stoughton meets Martin and Fowler draws Edin.
The tiebreaker goes this morning, the quarter-finals are in the afternoon and the semifinals are in the evening. The final is set for Sunday.
