The regional playdowns for berths to the provincial curling championships wrapped up in various clubs around Manitoba Sunday.
In Winnipeg, three-time Manitoba champion Vic Peters (West Kildonan); Jason Gunnlaugson (Assiniboine Memorial); and Scott Ramsay (Granite) all earned spots in the 2012 Safeway Championships in Dauphin (Feb. 8-12), as did Pembina’s Jim Coleman and West Kildonan’s Dave Elias.
Thistle’s Randy Dutiaume, the third seed coming into the weekend, failed to secure a berth.
Outside the perimeter, the Dean North team from Carman and Morris’ David Hamblin qualified in the Central area, while Flin Flon’s Brad Hyrich and Burntwood’s Rae Hainstock won Norman region berths.
Neepawa’s Kelly Robertson grabbed a Westman spot, while two Dauphin rinks — Glen Toews and Rae Kujanpaa — grabbed Parkland region invites.
Pinawa’s Richard Muntain earned an Eastman berth, while Jared Kolomaya out of Stonewall took home an Interlake invite.
Jeff Stoughton (defending champion), Mike McEwen, Dean Dunstone, Kyle Foster, Rob Van Kommer, Rob Fowler, William Lyburn, Sean Grassie, and Rae Hainstock already held spots for the Safeway Championship.
On the women’s side, Janet Harvey of Assiniboine Memorial, Darcy Robertson of Fort Rouge and the Granite’s Jill Thurston picked up invites to the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Portage la Prairie (Jan. 25-29) through Winnipeg zone qualifiers. Joelle Brown (Fort Rouge), the No. 2 seed coming into the Winnipeg regional playdowns, failed to grab a berth.
Other winners Sunday include Lisa Deriviere and Terry Ursel (Central region); Lori Forbes (Norman); and Dauphin’s Lisa Menard (Parkland).
Liza Park and Kelsey Russill (both curling out of Brandon) won invites to the Scotties through the Westman regional.
Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham (defending champion), Michelle Montford, Barb Spencer and Chelsea Carey all earned berths earlier in the season.
