THE two heavyweights of Canadian curling will clash once again, this time with the Pomeroy Inn & Suites National title on the line in Dawson Creek, B.C.

Kevin Martin and Glenn Howard both carry perfect 7-0 records into today’s showdown in the final of the third leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling.

Martin and his Edmonton rink had a tougher time on Saturday, pulling out two playoff wins in close games. Howard and his team from Coldwater, Ont., recorded a pair of blowouts to cruise into the title match.

The pair have met 32 times over the past decade, with Martin holding an 18-14 edge. He’s also won the last three meetings, including twice at the Capital One Canada Cup of Curling last month.

Martin is also the defending champion at the event and has won the National four times since 2004. Howard, meanwhile, last won the event in 2004.

In a semifinal matchup pitting the last two Olympic champions against each other, Martin beat Brad Gushue of St. John’s 4-3. With the game tied 3-3, Martin used hammer in the eighth to score the winning point. Earlier, Martin beat Sweden’s Nicklas Edin 4-1 in the quarter-finals, but that game was close until Martin scored a pair in the seventh.

Howard hammered surprise semifinalist Jim Cotter of Vernon, B.C., 8-3 in their semifinal. He built a 4-0 lead in the first three ends and never looked back. In his quarter-final, Howard beat 2011 Canadian and world champion Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg by the same 8-3 score.

Today’s winner will receive the $20,000 first-place prize in addition to the $5,000 each skip already collected for their five round-robin wins. The second-place team leaves with $16,000 including its round-robin bonus.

Each semifinalist won $7,000, plus $1,000 for each round-robin win and the quarter-finalists (Stoughton, Edin, Edmonton’s Kevin Koe and Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud) got $3,000 plus their round-robin bonus.
