As expected, Jeff Stoughton and his Charleswood rink will be the team to beat at the 2012 Safeway Championship.
The defending world champions were given the top seed for the event Tuesday, as Curl Manitoba revealed the 32-team draw for the men’s provincial championship at Credit Union Place in Dauphin Feb. 8-12.
Team Stoughton — featuring third Jon Mead, second Reid Carruthers and lead Steve Gould — is looking to claim its record fourth straight provincial championship and 10th overall title, but he’ll have a tough challenger again this year.
Mike McEwen (Fort Rouge) is listed as the second seed for the event, but his team’s play this season would suggest it has a case for the top honour. Leading the No. 1 ranked team on the World Curling Tour this season, the focused McEwen is looking to break through to the national championship for the first time in his career.
He’s lost the last two Safeway Championship finals to Stoughton.
Brandon’s Rob Fowler is slotted in as the No. 3 seed, with William Lyburn (Deer Lodge) and Daley Peters (West Kildonan) rounding out the Top 5.
The rest of the top seeds are as follows: Deer Lodge’s Sean Grassie (6th); Rossmere’s Dean Dunstone (7th); Assiniboine’s Jason Gunnlaugson (8th); Brandon’s Terry McNamee (9th); and West Kildonan’s Dave Elias (10th).
This year marks the 88th year of the Manitoba men’s curling championship. The winner in Dauphin moves on to the 2012 Tim Horton’s Brier in Saskatoon.
