The Winnipeg Blue Bombers rounded out the coaching staff Wednesday, announcing the additions of defensive line coach Will Plemons and linebackers coach Chip Garber.
Plemons will make his first visit to the CFL, after spending four seasons with Fresno State. He was the defensive line coach for the last three years with the Bulldogs and the high point of his tenure there came in 2010, when Fresno State’s defence was ranked sixth in the NCAA in sacks.
He’ll be tasked with maintaining Winnipeg’s ferocious pass rush reputation (a CFL-best 55 sacks last season) and figuring out a way to make up for the experience lost with the retirement of non-import defensive tackle Doug Brown.
Garber is a name more recognizable to Bombers fans. He spent the better part of the last two seasons as the defensive co-ordinator with the Toronto Argonauts, before being let go after the first six games of the 2011 season. He has an extensive resume, which includes stops in Hamilton (2008) and Washington (2009). Garber also has experience at the U.S. collegiate level, working within the North Texas, Hofstra, Army, Virginia Military Institute, Minnesota, Texas Christian, Mississippi State, Kentucky and Southern Methodist football programs
“I am very excited to have both Coach Plemons and Coach Garber join our staff for this upcoming season,” Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice said in a statement. “Both coaches have a ton of experience at either the collegiate level, or in Coach Garber’s case, the professional level and specifically the CFL. They will both be great teachers to our players and are great additions to our team.”
The two coaches join a Bombers staff that includes Gary Crowton (offensive co-ordinator), Tim Burke (defensive co-ordinator), Pat DelMonaco (offensive line), Markus Howell (receivers), and Kyle Walters (special teams).
