KIDS will be able to feed, touch and interact with enormous prehistoric puppet creatures when Australia’s Dinosaur Petting Zoo thunders into Winnipeg’s Kidsfest, June 7 to 10.
If that sounds familiar, it’s the same touring “zoo” by Erth Inc. that Manitoba Theatre for Young People is presenting as part of its 2012-13 season next March.
The 30th annual Kidsfest, also known as the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival, will be staged at its usual tent-equipped, fenced site at The Forks.
Organizers predict kids will go bananas for The Monkey Bunch, a kiddie rock band from Ontario that mixes humour with eco-friendly messages. Songs by the Juno-nominated quartet include Poopie Diaper, Stroller Patrol and Don’t Let Your Cars Idle.
Another headliner from Ontario is The Funny Waiter Show, a “comedy waiter act” with a “chicken or beef” routine and a plate-spinning finale that sounds as if it might be the fantasy of many a restaurant server.
Winnipeg’s holy trinity of family entertainers — Fred Penner, Jake Chénier and Al Simmons — will all be on hand at the four-day, rain-or-shine festival.
Other acts include acoustic/bluegrass musician Aaron Burnett, outrageous daredevil Gustavo the Impossibilist and Manitoba’s aboriginal Summer Bear Dance Troupe.
The site includes hands-on activity centres where youngsters can play with clay, make a kite, try on costumes, make crafts such as necklaces and puppets, or go critter-dipping.
At the Artists & Audiences interactive venue, kids can try the swinging trapeze, magic tricks, drumming and hoop dancing.
Children under two attend for free. Kids under 12 only need to pay once for the entire festival, provided they keep their wristbands on and get a fresh wristband each day.
Prices have increased by $2 per ticket over last year. Advance tickets are $14 each ($48 for a family pack of four), available now at all Winnipeg Safeway stores. Tickets at the gate are $16 each ($56 for a family pack of four).
