Bogosian isn’t game-ready but he’s back on the ice

It may be days or weeks before Zach Bogosian is game ready again, but the Winnipeg Jets defenceman was back on the ice for the first time this morning since offseason wrist surgery.

“This is the first time I’ve skated since August,” said Bogosian. “It definitely felt good to be out there. It’s coming along. Obviously, it’s a long, slow process. I’m just going to take it day by day. I didn’t shoot any pucks today, I just did some passing.”

Bogosian skated with Lee Stubbs, the Jets assistant athletic therapist/strength and conditioning and head athletic therapist Rob Milette, at MTS Iceplex prior to a collection of his teammates skating later in the morning. One of the team’s top defenceman and an emerging star, Bogosian had surgery last August on his right wrist, including the implementation of a metal screw to attach ligaments. That screw was removed at the beginning of December and the recovery time was estimated to be in the four-to-six month range. That could possibly make him available mid-February.

It’s uncertain yet as to when main training camp would begin, pending ratification of the new collective-bargaining agreement, but when the Jets do return to the ice as a team it’s unlikely Bogosian would be participating.

Bogosian, 22, is coming off a season in which he posted a career-high point total of 30 after scoring five times and adding 25 assists.

“With this, going into it you knew it was going to be a long, drawn out process,” said Bogosian. “I think Olli (Jokinen) went through something similar and I talked to him a little bit about it. It’s definitely a weird injury to have. I didn’t really have the chance to too many other athletes about it. But going through the process with several doctors, they helped me through it.”

Asked if the lockout experience was different for him compared to other players – Bogosian, as an injured player, drew a full salary and did most of his rehab at MTS Centre – the big defenceman grinned and added:

“My social life is going to bump up now that I can actually hang out with my teammates in the room. It was definitely a different experience and it’s not something I want to go through again.”
