A southpaw is coming North to join the Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team.

Left-handed pitcher Pete Gehle, a starting pitcher from the Sioux Falls Pheasants, has been signed for the 2013 season by the Goldeyes after being acquired in a trade for future considerations.

Gehle, 25, threw 104.2 innings in 18 starts with Sioux Falls last season and posted a 6-10 record along with a 5.50 ERA.

Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said he was impressed with Gehle in the games he pitched against the Goldeyes last season.

“He’s still a young guy and was able to log 100 innings in this league. That’s important when you’re putting together a rotation for the season,” Forney said in a press release. “We have some big expectations for him. We want him to come in and compete for a spot in the back end of our rotation.”

Gehle, a product of Flagstaff, Ariz., was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 2010 MLB draft before playing two seasons with Great Falls in the rookie Pioneer League.

The Goldeyes now have seven players signed for the 2013 season, including five pitchers and two position players.
