PHILADELPHIA — It’s cold, it’s heartless, it’s professional hockey.
Zach Redmond’s accident Thursday, coupled with the shoulder injury to Toby Enstrom — as well as hurts to Derek Meech and Ben Chiarot of the St. John’s IceCaps — meant Julian Melchiori’s phone rang late Thursday night.
And by Friday morning, the 21-year-old defenceman was on the ice at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia as a member of the Winnipeg Jets.
“I got a phone call from (IceCaps head coach) Keith McCambridge Thursday night later on the evening in Toronto,” said Melchiori. “We were out. I jumped in a cab, got back to the hotel and had a nice 4 a.m. wake-up call this morning and 7 a.m. flight. It’s been a long day so far.”
Opportunity
Not that he’s complaining.
“This is an amazing opportunity for me. It’s going to be a good experience, especially as a young guy,” said Melchiori. “I’m just going to work my hardest here and take every opportunity to make the best out of it.”
Drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the third round, 87th overall, in 2010, the 6-4, 209-pound product of Richmond Hill, Ont., has four assists in 33 games with the IceCaps this season.
“I’m a reliable guy out there who can be physical,” said Melchiori. “I’m a guy the team can depend on to keep those pucks moving forward. Whatever I can do after that is great.”
