AN interim, evaluation period is underway with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with Friday’s appointment of acting CEO Wade Miller.

One of the characters at the centre of how things may turn out is assistant general manager and director of Canadian scouting Kyle Walters.

He was elevated to that role last off-season after three seasons as special teams co-ordinator and running-backs coach.

Walters is a key figure going forward for the Bombers, given the multi-level rules of a CFL dispersal draft that’s coming in December. That’s the league’s blueprint to stock the new Ottawa RedBlacks franchise for next year’s action.

Among the regulations in play will be each current CFL team’s ability to protect a varying number of quarterbacks and Canadians.

Walters’ Bomber responsibilities to date have been assisting fired GM Joe Mack with the team’s salary-cap compliance, negotiating contracts and player recruitment.

Walters joined the Bombers after four seasons (2006-09) as head coach of the University of Guelph Gryphons in the CIS. The native of St. Thomas, Ont., moved up from assistant-coaching and defensive-co-ordinator roles there after a CFL playing career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Walters was a second-round pick of the 1996 CFL draft and played safety and halfback, helping the Tiger-Cats win the 1999 Grey Cup.

Walters also attended Guelph, earning a Bachelor of Science (biology) degree in 1997 after a four-year playing career, including being chosen team captain in his senior year.
