Offence working well in Bomber practices this week: Burke

Under the eyes of a new offensive coordinator, the Blue Bombers attack is getting its scattered toolbox in order.

Over this week’s practices, head coach Tim Burke said he’s seen more completed passes and an offence that’s reading off of the same page.

For that, he credits the philosophy of new OC Marcel Bellefeuille. Maybe it’s a little more specialized. The right tool for the right job. “Marcel isn’t trying to make everything work against everything,” Burke said, adding that he thought the players seemed to understand the plan earlier in the week than they typically do.

“With Gary (Crowton’s) offence, I think he was trying to make everything work against every coverage, or every blitz. Sometimes it just doesn’t.”

The Bombers wrapped up practice at Investors Group Field on Thursday before heading to Ontario in advance of Saturday’s game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Even though longtime Bombers long snapper Chris Cvetkovic is healthy now, after recovering from a minor injury last month, he likely won’t figure into the upcoming match — he was healthy when he sat out last week too.

Burke said coaches are simply happy with how linebacker Ian Wild is doing in that role.

Meanwhile, Burke spoke too of turning attention to the defence, which struggled to stifle Hamilton last week, especially shutting down the talented arm of Ticats quarterback Henry Burris.

“Once he gets going, he’s hard to stop,” Burke said. “But if you can rattle him, he comes into that kind of a streak as well. So hopefully we can do a better job putting him in a bad place.”
