Candy company Ferrero has pulled an election-themed commercial for white chocolates after complaints about racism and xenophobia. The election-themed ad was part of a German campaign advertising the launch of white chocolate Ferrero Kºsschen (little kisses) year round. They were previously only available seasonally. The uproar about the ad sparked a discussion about the limits of political correctness -- and the apparent insensitivity of the advertiser to issues of race.

The uproar about the ad sparked a discussion about the limits of political correctness — and the apparent insensitivity of the advertiser to issues of race.

In the ad, a giant talking chocolate package gives a speech in front of cheering supporters holding placards and chanting “Yes White Can” and “White Nuts Stay.” “We all want to change the country for the tastier, we want white Ferrero Kºsschen forever,” the anthropomorphic package says before a triumphant poster unfurls on the stage saying “Germany Votes White.” Germans go to the polls for a federal election Sept. 22.
