Keep it a Merry Christmas and plug in the car this holiday season.
That’s the message coming from CAA Manitoba this week. Over the next 12 days, the auto association anticipates that it will have to come to the aid of over 4,700 motorists experiencing roadside issues. Those issues include vehicles that won’t start, as well as vehicles that are stranded, stuck, stalled or locked.
“Being stranded on the side of the road can quickly dampen your holiday spirit,” CAA Manitoba spokeswoman Liz Peters said in a statement. “A lot of problems can be avoided with regular vehicle maintenance before heading out for a road trip and by plugging it in when your car won’t be used for a few days.”
CAA Manitoba expects to answer calls for approximately 1,700 battery boosts and battery replacements, with another 600 calls to help open vehicles that were accidently locked with the keys inside. Roughly 475 calls are expected to help with flat tires, fuel delivery and vehicle extractions (out of a ditch or a high snow bank).
Most calls (70 per cent) can be dealt with on the side of the road. Still, CAA Manitoba expects to tow about 1,200 vehicles from now to Jan. 3, 2014.
CAA Manitoba said it serviced “close to 10,000 Manitobans” during a two-week cold snap earlier this month.
