Former University of Nebraska Cornhuskers kicker Brett Maher says he has signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Maher tweeted from his personal account Wednesday night that he is “excited for my opportunity with the @Wpg_BlueBombers this fall!” Maher also retweeted his agent, Robert Roche, who congratulated his client for “signing with the Wpg_BlueBombers.”

Maher handled place-kicking, punting and kickoff duties for the Cornhuskers and worked out for the Bombers during the team’s recent mini-camp in Sarasota, Florida.

Maher was still entertaining interest from the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs at the time he worked out for Winnipeg, but he spoke glowingly in an interview with reporters about his experience with the Bombers.

“I’ve definitely been very pleased with this organization and with the coaches and scouts and staff that I’ve been in contact with. That’s something that you can’t substitute in any business is working with good people,” said Maher.

“And that’s been very reassuring and very comfortable for me…”

Maher is a Nebraska native and an import. His American passport will work against him competing at training camp next month for a job that CFL teams prefer to hand off to Canadians, but the fact he has experience at all three kicking tasks will work in his favour.

Maher joins veteran punter Mike Renaud and rookie kicker Lirim Hajrullahu on the Bombers roster. Renaud and Hajrullahu are both non-imports.
