With one-time major-league infielder Rhyne Hughes out for the season, the Goldeyes have found another in former big-league slugger Reggie Abercrombie.
The 33-year-old outfielder flew into Winnipeg today, just a day before training camp is set to open with a fan open house at Shaw Park. Abercrombie knows the park already: he arrives in Winnipeg after playing part of the last four seasons with the American Association’s Sioux Falls Canaries.
Before that, he played parts of three seasons in major-league ball, including 111 games with the Florida Marlins in 2006, where he batted .212 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 255 at-bats. The next season he played in 35 games for Florida and another 34 with the Houston Astros.
In the indie leagues, Abercrombie was a big power hitter, who swung for .316 with 54 runs and 213 RBI in 242 games with Sioux Falls.
“We are super thrilled to have Reggie join the Goldeyes organization,” Fish manager Rick Forney said of Abercrombie, who started the season in the Mexican League with Monclova, where he hit .314 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 16 games. “With Rhyne Hughes not being able to come up and join our team, we needed to find someone that could replace Rhyne in the middle of the lineup and be an impact guy. He’s the best guy out there for that role.”
Hughes had to bow out of the 2014 season to receive treatment for a heart condition.
