The press box at Investors Group Field goes by a new name, a handle that celebrates two Winnipeg media legends.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced this morning that the working media area inside the Bob Irving Media Centre at the University of Manitoba stadium will now be known as the Two Jacks press box, honouring the late Jack Matheson and Jack Wells.

John ‘Jack’ Matheson was a Winnipeg-born sports journalist who covered the Blue Bombers for the Winnipeg Tribune and CJOB radio for nearly four decades. He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1986. Matheson passed away in 2011.

John Hampson ‘Jack’ Wells, a Winnipeg-native, began his sports broadcasting career in 1939 and became the Blue Bombers play-by-play voice in 1941. ‘Cactus’ Jack, as he was affectionately known, also worked CFL games for CBC television and was enshrined into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1988. He passed away in 1999.

“The two Jacks were both esteemed journalists, each a master at his craft. But more than that, they were good men who were admired and respected by everyone who knew them. Many of the journalists covering the Bombers today credit the two Jacks as being the inspiration for their own careers,” Bombers President and CEO Wade Miller said in a statement.
