ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Ainsley McSorley set out to just get in shape back in 2006 at age 22. She ended up changing her life. In November 2006, just five months after her first fitness competition, McSorley earned professional status in the bikini division at the FAME North American Championships in Miami.

McSorley competed in 10 fitness shows in five years and launched a fitness modelling career. McSorley appeared on Oxygen Magazine’s July 2012 cover as well as covers of Inside Fitness Magazine and Women’s Health & Fitness.

After she retired from competition, McSorley opened her own fitness company called Revive Fitness (www.revivewinnipeg.com) in 2010, which now has four locations. With a degree in human nutritional sciences and certification as a personal training specialist, McSorley works mostly in weight-loss, muscle toning and building, assisting those preparing for competitions and other specialty programs.

McSorley continues to be a high-profile figure in the fitness industry as she represents Allmax Nutrition at international trade shows including the Olympia Expo in Las Vegas on Sept. 18-21.

“I stay in shape to do events like that throughout the year so I set small goals for myself along the way,” McSorley said. “Now, it’s such a lifestyle to me that I stay fit year round. I’ve made it a habit, instead of short-term dieting, and I really try to push moderation with my business. We talk about balance, lifestyle and healthy choices. I try to tell people to focus on their personal goals and not to compare themselves to others. Focus on positive aspects other than just weight. Can you do more pushups than when you started, are you getting stronger so it’s not all based on the scale.”

There will open house events at two Revive locations this month — Revive River Heights (Unit 30-1580 Taylor Ave.) on Sept. 24 at 5-8 p.m. and Revive St. James (2645 Portage Ave.) on Sept. 27 at 1-3 p.m.

1. Favourite workout?

My favorite type of workout is circuit training, which is also one of our most popular programs at Revive. Circuits are constantly changing to keep things fresh but the overall idea is to work the entire body with minimal rests. Quick, efficient and challenging!

2. Favourite workout song?

I am so not musically inclined — the same song could be on repeat through an entire workout and I wouldn’t even notice! I have a remix of country music on my iPod that I put on repeat and skip to All Over the Road by Easton Corbin.

3. Fitness tip?

I live by the term “lifestyle” — no extreme dieting, no intense training periods, etc. I live a healthy lifestyle, which has allowed me to form healthy habits rather than short-term routines. If I’m out with friends, I don’t have to worry so much about what I’m ordering since I eat well on a regular basis. Never make foods “bad” or “not allowed.” It’s a mind game that will only make you want them more. Everything in moderation.

4.What’s in your fridge?

You will always find my fridge stocked with chicken breasts, salmon, white fish, bell peppers, asparagus, almond milk, greek yogurt and natural peanut butter. I religiously have a smoothie in the morning made of one scoop of natural vanilla protein, almond milk, spinach, one tablespoon of natural nut butter and a half of a banana.

5.What’s your guilty pleasure?

When I used to extreme diet, I could answer this question specifically as it consisted of foods I didn’t allow myself like chips and pasta. Now, because I eat in moderation, my guilty pleasure is always changing based on what I feel like at the time. Some faves are steak dinner, cheesecake and pancakes!

Positive anticipation is growing about major housing developments underway in Winnipeg’s downtown

Gabrielle Piché 10 minute read Friday, Sep. 25, 2026

If traffic is light and the wind is down, Somia Sadiq is able to hear the roar of Winnipeg Jets fans twice: first through her window, then on TV.

From her apartment view high above downtown, she can look out at Graham Avenue’s painted pedestrian landscape, see construction cranes and hear the heavy equipment at work as massive housing projects take shape at The Forks, at what used to be Portage Place shopping centre and at the former Hudson’s Bay building.

Sadiq has lived at 300 Main for 2 1/2 years, a few steps from the city’s famous, windy and reopened-to-pedestrians Portage Avenue intersection. At 42 storeys, it’s the tallest building in Winnipeg.

She is among 18,000 downtown residents who will soon be joined by thousands of others attracted to the city’s core by the new wave of major construction projects.

Winnipeg a character all its own onscreen

Watch something shot in Winnipeg with a Winnipegger, and you will be treated to a live running commentary. We can’t help playing “spot the location.”

When we recognize that field/statue/mall/intersection/theatre, we have to say it. It’s practically civically mandated.

A friend told me she was at a film screening at which people literally applauded footage of the Mint. (That likely would have been 2005’s The Constant Gardener.)

Being excited about seeing Portage Place Mall at Christmastime in the trailer for Violent Night 2 — and then exclaiming, to your husband, “Oh, look, it’s Portage Place Mall at Christmastime!” — is not, I will admit, particularly cosmopolitan behaviour. In fact, I could be accused of suffering from a mild case of Podunkitis.

Flammable gas culprit of 2024 Transcona home explosion: police

Malak Abas 2 minute read Friday, Sep. 25, 2026

Flammable gas is believed to be the cause of a 2024 house explosion in Transcona that damaged neighbouring homes and displaced residents.

“As a result of the investigation and upon Crown review, the explosion is believed to be an isolated incident,” Winnipeg Police Service Const. Dani McKinnon said in an email Friday afternoon.

“There are no public safety concerns connected to this incident, and no criminal charges have been laid.”

The sudden blast happened in a bungalow on Camrose Bay on June 26, 2024. It levelled the home and caused significant damage to 22 other houses. At the time, it was described as “catastrophic” by the fire chief at the scene.

Bison kicker Turner named captain, shows she belongs

Joshua Frey-Sam 7 minute read Yesterday at 11:17 PM CDT

Even on nights like this, Maya Turner can appreciate how far she’s come.

Though it feels like yesterday that the Manitoba Bisons kicker arrived on the scene with an unheralded right leg and a point to prove, these days the fifth-year student-athlete is lining up to split the uprights with a veteran boot and the added responsibility of being a team captain.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy, though.

It’s now four years ago that Turner ditched her NCAA Division 1 soccer career at Loyola University in Chicago to kick a different ball on the gridiron and signed with the Bisons, who were one of more than one hundred programs across North America that she sent tape to in hopes of realizing a new dream.
