Two out of three ain’t bad for baby Jets
PENTICTON, B.C. — Two wins out of three games repeated the Winnipeg Jets’ results from last year at the Canucks Young Stars Classic tournament at the South Okanagan Events Centre that ended Monday.
Winnipeg defeated Edmonton 5-4 in a shootout Monday, rallying from a 4-2 third-period deficit.
“It’s nice to get the two wins,” said Keith McCambridge, the coach of the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps who again handled the bench at this tournament. “Overall, it’s about assessing these players. For the players to pick up what we were trying to relay to them in terms of systems and competitiveness, what we needed on the ice, it was really strong. This was an enjoyable group.”
Explosive Ehlers
THE Jets’ 2014 first-round draft pick Nikolaj Ehlers shone as many expected.
He played in two games — missing the middle contest with a minor groin tweak — and hit for two sharp goals in Monday’s third period to bring the Jets back to overtime. He also scored in the shootout, which the Jets won 2-0.
“He played that off-side, something he played in junior, and he seemed comfortable taking pucks to the middle,” McCambridge said of Ehlers, who played on a line Monday with centre Chase DeLeo and left-winger Scott Kosmachuk. “I thought he really stood out… and his speed stood out and his ability to get the shot away in stride.
“A little bit more of the pro game came into play with the way he played in this afternoon’s game, with that back pressure through the neutral zone.”
ANOTHER STOPPER: One of the goaltenders on the ice at the MTS Iceplex for informal workouts Monday was former L.A.-Calgary stopper Danny Taylor. The 28-year-old will attend Jets camp on a PTO (professional tryout) after spending last year with Farjestads of the Swedish league, where he was 4-11-0 with a .917 save percentage and 2.32 GAA.
A seventh-round pick of the Kings in 2004, Taylor played one game for the Kings in 2007-08 and didn’t make another NHL start until 2013 when he played two games for the Flames and picked up his first career win. Taylor would give the Jets organization some experienced goaltending depth with Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson with the big club, Connor Hellebuyck and Jussi Olkinuora likely to be in St. John’s and prospects Eric Comrie and Jason Kasdorf in the wings.
FAN FEST 4-1-1: The Jets have announced plans for their inaugural Fan Fest, to be held this Saturday at the MTS Iceplex. Fan Fest will run from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and is free to the general public. It will include access to training camp sessions, player and management interviews with TSN’s Dennis Beyak, as well as interactive games and activities.
The first 5,000 fans on site will receive a free lunch; the first 3,000 will be able to watch one of four camp sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. and followed at 9:50 a.m., noon and 12:50 p.m.
Admission to these sessions is limited to available seating on a first come, first served basis. Fans that do not get into one session will be able to line up for the ensuing one.
JETSTREAM: Two former Jets have found work — James Wright with Zagreb of the KHL and Antti Miettinen with Berlin of the German league.
