Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 24/09/2014 (4088 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Call it practice, or call it Willy Watch: Day Four, but either way the Bombers starting pivot was once again throwing hard at Investors Group Field today.
There was no question that Willy was in the saddle for the practice, showing little outward sign of soreness in the right shoulder he sprained almost two weeks ago. So, let’s fire up this question again: will Willy start against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday? Well, the Bombers shielded the quarterbacks from media interviews today, and head coach Mike O’Shea remained non-committal.
“We’ll wait to see how he feels tomorrow,” O’Shea said. “I think he pushed it today, and we’ll see if there’s any reaction tomorrow morning if he wakes up, any pain, limited function, whatever it is… If he regresses, then we’ll re-evaluate. So there’s no point in naming him the starter now. I don’t think he regressed, it looks like he’s progressing.”
In other injury news, right tackle Cordaro Howard looks to be out for Saturday’s game, with “various whatnots.” That means Devin Tyler will come off the practice roster to fill in that position. Tyler, a hulking 6-foot-7, 300 pound journeyman who has made 30 CFL starts in the last four seasons, joined the Bombers practice roster in late August. He started the season with Saskatchewan but spent six weeks on the injured list before they released him.
Last season in Saskatchewan, Tyler took regular second-team reps in front of Willy. “I’m confident with him behind me, because I know he’s a tough guy, he’s going to make good decisions,” Tyler said. And yeah, if Willy does start, the Ticats pass rushers could be extra hungry to get him down, sensing a weak point in that shoulder. You don’t need to tell Tyler about that danger. “I gotta keep ‘em off him, I know. I know what I gotta do.”
