Two Winnipeg authors have made the finals for Governor General’s Literary Awards.
Joan Thomas, who wrote the novel The Opening Sky, is one of five nominees for fiction while Rick Chafe’s The Secret Mask has made the four-name shortlist for the drama award.
The Opening Sky was published by McClelland & Stewart, and launches tonight at McNally Robinson Booksellers at 7 p.m. The Secret Mask was published by Playwrights Canada Press.
Also nominated in the fiction category were Michael Crummey of St. John’s, N.L. for Sweetland; Bill Gaston of Victoria for Juliet Was a Surprise; Claire Holden Rothman of Westmount, Que., for My October and Thomas King of Guelph, Ont., for The Back of the Turtle.
The three other nominees for the drama award are Sean Dixon of Toronto for A God in Need of Help; Janet Munsil of Victoria for That Elusive Spark and Jordan Tannahill of Toronto for Age of Minority: Three Solo Plays.
The Governor General awards are overseen by the Canada Council of the Arts. The winners will be decided on Nov. 18.
