Though the celebration of the Finnish Flash will take place some 2,400 kilometres away, Winnipeg Jets fans can still get in on the party.
The Jets are hosting a viewing party at MTS Centre on Sunday, Jan. 11, the night the Anaheim Ducks will honour Teemu Selanne at the Ducks’ home rink, the Honda Center. Anaheim will retire Selanne’s No. 8 jersey in a ceremony prior to the game.
The game will be broadcast on TSN3 and will be shown on the giant video screens at MTS Centre. The Jets will be the opponent against the Ducks that night.
Doors at MTS Centre open at 6:30 p.m., with the games scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. CST.
Admission is $5. Tickets are available on the Winnipeg Jets website.
Born in Helsinki, Finland, the popular Selanne started his 21-year NHL career in Winnipeg in 1992, scoring 76 goals and winning the Calder Trophy for the league’s top rookie. He played four seasons with the original NHL Jets, scoring 306 points in 231 games in Winnipeg before being traded to Anaheim during the 1995-96 season.
Selanne, who retired following the 2013-14 season, registered 988 points in 886 games in 15 seasons with the Ducks, winning a Stanley Cup in 2007. Selanne also saw time with the San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche during his NHL career.
