The largest outdoor curling event in Canada is set to roar in Winnipeg.
The Subaru Canada Ironman Outdoor Curling Bonspiel will be held on the Assiniboine River at The Forks this weekend. The draw gets underway on Friday, Feb. 6 and wraps up Sunday, Feb 8.
Now in its 14th year, the event is an annual fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Organizers are happy to announce that a record number of participants (70 teams, 280 people) will take part in the weekend bonspiel.
“In the last 14 years, we’ve never received this type of response,” founder and president Eric Dawson said in a statement. “Not only did we sell out the event, but we have exceeded our record.”
To make room for the curlers, the two sheets of ice on the frozen Assiniboine will be closed to the hockey-playing public during the duration of the bonspiel.
Puck enthusiasts are asked to please use the ice in front of the Scotiabank Stage or the available ice on the Red River to satisfy their hockey-playing needs.
