Fundraising is about to begin for an ambitious re-development of the Gas Station Theatre Arts Centre at the corner of River Avenue and Osborne Street
A $32-million, eight-storey, 82-unit housing co-op, featuring affordable and community housing, as well as a brand new 300-seat performance space, are part of the project.
In partnership with the Performing Arts Lodge and several other community groups it is hoped that a total of 31 of the units will be affordable and 51 market-priced.
Lloyd Axworthy and developer Colin Lount are co-chairing the capital campaign that will look to raise about $9 million, enough to pay for the theatre component.
Lakeview Realty of Canada are the developers of the non-profit project.
Kerri Irvin-Ross, provincial housing minister, said the province is keen to participate and is working through its due diligence.
