ALANA MILLER upset the No. 8-ranked squash player in the world Sunday as Canada split its matches on the first day of action at the women’s world team squash championships in Cairo.

Miller, a Winnipeg native, scored a stunning 4-11, 11-8, 11-7, 12-10 victory over Egypt’s Omneya Abdel Kawy to give Canada a 1-0 lead. Miller is Canada’s top-ranked player, 36th internationally.

“This was my best career win to date and it was great,” said Miller. “I really focused on establishing good length and going aggressively to the front when the opening was there.”

Runa Reta of Montreal worked hard to complete what could have been one of the biggest team match upsets in recent years, but finally fell 11-6, 7-11, 11-2, 11-9 to Engy Kheirellah in a match that lasted more than an hour. In the deciding match, Raneem El Weleily defeated Carolyn Russell of Vancouver 11-6, 11-10, 11-5.
