There will be no record-setting provincial threepeat this year for Braden Calvert, after a day of surprises at the Manitoba junior curling championships.

On Saturday night, the two-time Canadian and reigning world champion Calvert fell 8-6 to fourth seed Derek Oryniak in the 2-vs-2 page playoff game. On the women’s side, top seed Kristy Watling also fell out of contention, with a squeaker 8-7 loss in the 2-vs-2 game to second seed Abby Ackland.

Calvert entered the provincials on the hunt for his third consecutive junior men’s title, which would have set a new provincial record.

Meanwhile, top seed Matt Dunstone and fifth seed Laura Burtnyk will wait to find out who they will face in the Sunday afternoon championship games.

Dunstone, the 2013 Manitoba and Canadian junior champion, clinched his final berth on Saturday with a 7-2 win over JT Ryan in the top page playoff game. That means that Ryan, who came into the tournament as fifth seed, will slide down to face Oryniak in the semifinal.

Burtnyk, who began the week as fifth seed, booked her ticket to the final with a 6-2 win over Altona’s Mackenzie Zacharias. The latter team will now face Ackland in the semi.

Both semifinals are slated to start at 9 a.m. on Sunday in Rivers. The championship games are slated for 1 p.m.
