As basketball playoffs sweep Manitoba, two standout teens have earned the title of Manitoba high school athlete of the week.

On Tuesday, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced Westwood Warriors guard Rachel Shingleton as its urban athlete of the week.

The 5-9 senior, who keeps up a 94 per cent academic average, helped push her team to two tournament finals and averages three steals, eight rebounds and nine points a game.

She was also a key factor in the Warriors’ third-place conference win over Oak Park.

“She has worked hard in the offseason to focus on shot selection, confidence with her dribble and making the right pass,” Warriors coach Sarah Lundgren said. “Rachel is a born leader, she doesn’t know how to quit or give up.”

Outside the Perimeter, the rural athlete of the week honour went to Justin Ejercito, who plays with Gladstone’s William Morton Warriors. While only in Grade 10, the 5-7 guard helped his team soar to a Zone 7 A-level title.

Last year, he led his junior varsity team to a provincial championship, and was named to the Manitoba all-star team. Coach Donovan Nemetchek called Erjecito a “real game changer,” and praised his finish at the hoop.
