Greg Selinger wants to fast-track the completion of an inner Winnipeg ring road, beginning with the extension of the Chief Peguis Trail.

At a news conference at city hall Wednesday, the NDP leader said he would like to see work start on the project within four years. He said he believes it can be done with just federal and provincial money, freeing up Winnipeg tax dollars to repair municipal roads.

For half a century the city has had a master transportation plan for completing an inner ring road. Completion is currently set for 2031.

Selinger said he would like to see that timeline speeded up to shorten local commutes and take trucks and heavy traffic off local streets and out of downtown.

The inner Winnipeg ring road would be built to provincial highway standards and be integrated with Lagimodiere and Bishop Grandin boulevards and include the widening of Kenaston.

Selinger estimated the first phase — extending Chief Peguis Trail — would cost $130 million. He said some local federal MPs have expressed interest in sharing the cost on a 50-50 basis.
