Winnipeg’s  public works department is using all of its salt- and- sand-spreading trucks on city streets to deal with freezing rain which has coated the city in ice.

Crews salted major streets overnight and are turning to collector streets and other bus routes, a news release said this morning.

Sidewalk sanding is underway on main streets and could continue to others, depending on weather conditions.

Winnipeg Transit is reporting delays of up to 20 minutes on most routes, though all routes are operable.

Garbage and recyling pickups are temporarily suspended and the water and waste department is monitoring conditions on residential streets and back lanes before resuming operations.

The Brady Road landfill is open but the city is warning customers to use caution when leaving the Permiter highway near the site.

About 30 front-end loaders are trying to remove blocked water from street drains and to minimize standing water.

Public works is even monitoring potholes, a phenomenon often related to spring thaws than mid-February.

And icy conditions have also closed the Assiniboine Park Zoo, the city is reporting. It expects the zoo to re-open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Many flights arriving and departing at Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg are also dealyed or cancelled. Travellers should check the airport’s web site for updated information.
