EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers scored a pair of shorthanded goals in the third period and went on to beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 in pre-season NHL action Thursday night.
Connor McDavid scored a power-play goal early in the first period to hand the host Oilers a 1-0 lead at Rogers Place.
The 19-year-old Oilers captain took a pass from Jordan Eberle, dangled around Winnipeg defenceman Ben Chiarot and then fired the puck past goalie Connor Hellebuyck at 5:16 with blueliner Mark Stuart serving a tripping penalty.
The Jets nearly tied the game on a power-play chance of their own, but Oilers netminder Jonas Gustavsson made a great save off Bryan Little from in tight with about 20 seconds left in the period.
Hellebuyck and Gustavsson made 10 saves apiece in the opening frame.
SECOND PERIOD
Patrick Maroon added to the Oilers lead with an unassisted power-play marker at 7:07 of the second period.
But Jets left-winger Brandon Tanev broke in alone and beat goalie Cam Talbot through the legs to cut the lead to one at 11:28 of the middle period.
Talbot replaced Gustavsson for several minutes while the Oilers starter dealt with an equipment issue.
THIRD PERIOD
McDavid and Mark Letestu both scored shorthanded goals early in the final frame to give the Oilers a 4-1 lead.
Tyler Pitlick added to the lead before Jets centre Bryan Little scored on a pass from defenceman Paul Postma to close out the scoring.
The Jets came into game riding a four-game winning streak in the pre-season. The club wraps up the exhibition season Saturday night in St. Paul, Minn., against the Wild.
Winnipeg opens the regular season Thursday, Oct. 13 against the Carolina Hurricanes at MTS Centre.
