ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild scored four goals in the third period to beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 in NHL pre-season action Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center.

Minnesota defenceman Mike Reilly scored on a blast from the point early in the third period to break a 1-1 tie.

The Wild were enjoying their fourth power-play of the night, courtesy of a needless roughing penalty by defenceman Dustin Byfuglien, when Reilly’s cannon beat goalie Michael Hutchinson at 1:36 of the third.

Just four minutes later, Wild centre Christoph Bertschy flipped a backhand and the puck slipped between Hutchinson’s glove and pad to boost the lead to a pair of goals.

The Wild went up 4-1 on defenceman Marco Scandella’s hard drive at 10:15. Charlie Coyle added a late goal for the hosts.

Hutchinson made 29 saves, while Minnesota goalie Devan Dubnyk stopped 17 shots.

This is the final pre-season game for both squads.

The Jets host the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night in their season-opener at the MTS Centre.

FIRST PERIOD

Joel Armia scored his second goal of the NHL pre-season at 11:46 of the first period to pull the Jets even at 1-1 after the first period.

Armia, playing on a line with Mathieu Perreault and Patrik Laine, took a terrific pass from defenceman Josh Morrissey, tried to beat Dubnyk once and then stuffed in the rebound.

The equalizer came less than two minutes after Minnesota left-winger Zach Parise deflected a point shot past Hutchinson at 10:07 on the power play.

Winnipeg right-winger Nikolaj Ehlers had a breakaway just seconds into the opening period, but the chance was snuffed out on a great poke check by Dubnyk.

SECOND PERIOD

There was no scoring in the middle frame, although the Wild pressed mightily for go-ahead goal.

Hutchinson made a brilliant glove save off Parise with the Jets a man short midway through the second period.

Winnipeg’s best chance to score came late in the frame when Laine, pressing for his first goal of the pre-season, unleashed a shot from the left faceoff dot that sailed high and wide.
