VICTORIA — They both got a bit of a scare here on the afternoon draw today.
But when the dust settled, both Manitoba-based teams competing at the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts emerged as winners.
Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones, playing as Team Canada, neatly plucked a New Brunswick counter off the four-foot with the final rock of the game to defeat Andrea Kelly’s Fredericton foursome 5-3. Meanwhile, one sheet over, it was Team Manitoba’s Barb Spencer playing a delicate hit-and-roll with the final rock of her game against Yukon/NWT’s Kerry Galusha to emerge with an 8-7 victory.
The win improved Jones to a perfect 4-0 and vaulted her team into a tie for first-place with BC’s Marla Mallett. The win for Spencer was her first of this event and gives her team life at 1-3.
“It was exciting,” Jones said of throwing the last rock for a victory at an event where she had yet to play a full ten-end game until today. “It’s fun and you want to make a few of those as the week goes on.”
Spencer sounded more relieved than excited. “It was a struggle,” said Spencer, “but the first win is always the hardest here. It’s always a struggle.”
