About the RANGERS
Expect New York to be a snarly squad when it begins back-to-back road games in Winnipeg at the MTS Centre before heading to Chicago to play the Blackhawks Friday. The Rangers were dumped 4-2 Tuesday by the New York Islanders.
LW J.T. Miller has emerged as the Rangers’ offensive leader. The first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft leads the club with eight goals and 12 assists, a solid follow to his 43-point output in 82 games last season.
RW Michael Grabner is having a tremendous season for the Rangers. The native of Austria, who played parts of four seasons with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose (2006-10) when he was property of the Vancouver Canucks, has 13 goals. But calling him a late bloomer isn’t entirely accurate: he potted 34 for the Isles during the 2010-11 campaign. RW Rick Nash has 11 goals, while C Kevin Hayes has 10.
It’s still TBD as to who will start in goal for the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist, who took the loss against the Islanders, has done the bulk of the work, going 12-8 with a 2.55 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. Antti Raanta has been terrific in limited duty, going 5-1 (2.20 GAA, .931 save percentage).
New York could be without LW Jimmy Vesey, who suffered an upper-body injury Tuesday. Nash (groin) could also be sidelined. The team is already missing RW Pavel Buchnevich (back), C Mika Zibanejad (broken fibula) and LW Matt Puempel (concussion).
