Snow, blowing snow, freezing drizzle on tap

A winter storm warning was issued earlier today for Winnipeg and southern Manitoba, but has now ended for Brandon, Carberry, Treherne, Melita, Boissevain, and Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.
 
  Environment Canada issued an updated winter storm warning at 3:35 p.m., saying the area could get snow, blowing snow and freezing drizzle.

As well, the weather service said the warning means “dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions.”

“It will be slippery and messy ‘til Thursday and cool through the weekend — not what people want to hear,” Environment Canada meteorologist Jim Slipec said this morning.

Slipec said the rain we’re getting now is already turning to freezing rain and ice pellets in some parts of Winnipeg and should fall as snow later this morning.

The storm will bring winds from the north of 50 kilometres per hour, gusting to 70 kilometres per hour. Temperatures should drop to -2 C this afternoon and reach a low of -6 C overnight.

Slipec said weather conditions will be worse west of Winnipeg, with the largest amounts of snowfall today in a region between Portage la Prairie to the Turtle Mountains, with 20-25 centimetres of snow. Strong north winds will create blowing snow and poor visibility in many areas. Turtle Mountain School Division will have no buses and no classes today due to the pending storm.

Another five centimetres of snow is expected for Winnipeg on Wednesday, with a high of -4 C and a low of -6 C.

Once the snow stops, cooler temperatures settle in for Thursday and Friday, with highs of -8 C and lows of -11 C.

Slipec said things should warm up on Saturday with a high of -1 C. Sunny skies are in store through the weekend, with a high of 5 C on Sunday and Monday.
