A local craft brewery has come up with an alternative to donning a hard hat and lifting a hammer while still helping build homes for those in need.

Torque Brewing has partnered with Habitat for Humanity, creating the Foundation American pale ale and directing a portion of the beer’s proceeds toward the organization’s efforts.

The brewery will direct four dollars to Habitat for Humanity for every 12 pack of cans sold, as well as one dollar from every pint of the ale sold in its King Edward Street tap room. Cans are available at Manitoba Liquor Marts and select beer vendors.

Torque president John Heim anticipates donating a total of around $10,000 from the sales of Foundation to Habitat for Humanity.

“We thought it was a great way to give back locally, sell local beer to Manitobans to help build homes in Manitoba,” Heim said at a press event on Wednesday morning at the brewery. Heim describes the beer as an easy-drinking, aromatic summer beer that would taste good after “swinging a hammer all day.”

“Every Habitat home that is built is a result of the partnership of hundreds of individuals and dozens of organizations. What John has done here exemplifies that,” said Sandy Hopkins, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Manitoba.

He also noted the organization plans to build 25 homes in Manitoba this year and that the money raised from sales of the Torque beer will go directly to help build those homes.

“It’s great to see a young company like Torque understand the importance of being involved in the community, of giving back to the community,” Hopkins said.
