LINCOLN, Neb. — The Winnipeg Goldeyes will have to go through a major league obstacle as they kick off their playoffs tonight in Lincoln.
Shairon Martis, a veteran pitcher who has previously played for both the Washington Nationals and the Minnesota Twins, will take the ball for the hometown Saltdogs in Game 1 of the best-of-five American Association semifinal series.
First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m.

Winnipeg had the league’s top offence this season but will be in tough against Martis, 30, who went 4-1 with a sparkling 2.01 ERA in the seven games he played with Lincoln since joining them. Martis began this season playing Triple-A ball in the Baltimore Orioles organization before he was released in mid-July.
The Goldeyes will also have their ace on the mound tonight in the form of Kevin McGovern, who went 13-3 with a 2.56 ERA over 21 starts.
Winnipeg captured the North division title this season with a 62-38 record. Lincoln won the Central division by going 58-41. The teams played six times during the regular season, all back in June, and went 3-3.
It could be a lively crowd at Haymarket Park here in Lincoln – all tickets, regardless of section, are being sold at the discount price of $7 – and those in attendance will enjoy “Buck Night” prices of just $1 on select beer, along with hot dogs and popcorn.
Lincoln averaged more than 3,300 fans per game during the regular season.
The series continues Thursday night in Lincoln, then shifts 1,100 kilometres north to Shaw Park in Winnipeg. Game 3 is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. Game 4 and 5, if necessary, will be held on Sunday and Monday.
South division winner Wichita (61-38) is taking on wildcard winner Gary (57-43) in the other semi-final beginning tonight.
The winners of both series will meet in the championship final starting next week.
