A five-year-old boy died this morning in a house fire at Sandy Bay Ojibway Nation.

Police said the fire occurred at about 7:45 a.m. in a home that had been built less than six months ago.

Tristen Mousseau, one of 10 children home at the time, died in the fire, which family members say started in the living room.

No other serious injuries were reported, though a young girl suffered from mild smoke inhalation.

"Two families were living in the residence,” said Inspector Marc Saindon with the Dakota Ojibway Police Service. He said the volunteer fire department at nearby Amaranth responded with emergency medical services.

The office of the fire commissioner is investigating the cause of the blaze, he said.

This is the second time in the last three months a child has died in a house fire at the reserve..

On Feb. 3, nine-year-old Hope Richard perished in a blaze at the Sandy Bay home where she lived with 13 other family members.

About 1,445 people live at Sandy Bay, located 165 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
