Winnipeg scores top spot for Culture Days activities

For the fifth year in a row, Winnipeg has topped the list of cities that had the most activities available in Canada during Culture Days.

Culture Days, which took place from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, is an annual, weekend-long event that raises “awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.”

Each year, organizers release a list of the top 10 cities and towns, according the number of activities published on the Culture Days website.

Winnipeg has taken the overall top spot, as well as first place in the 500,000-and-over-population category, since 2013.

Flin Flon, known for its exceptional number of Culture Days events, is No. 3 overall for 2017 (just behind Toronto) and No. 1 in the 49,999 and under population category.

“This is absolutely a huge accomplishment for Winnipeg and Manitoba,” said Culture Days Manitoba project manager Melissa Courcelles.

“Flin Flon is an incredible success story, coming in top three overall and No. 1 in their category. And also Portage la Prairie made it in the top three in their category.

“I am very pleased and amazed with the way Manitobans have embraced the idea of Culture Days and Nuit Blanche, in terms of participation by activity organizers, artists, arts and cultural organizations, volunteers and the public.

“Our community seems to really value partaking in an event that has the goal to give everyone access to arts and culture and that bridges relationships.

“(It’s) a festival that is part of a national movement, and that really puts our cities and province on the map.”
