THE Derick Armstrong saga ended quietly Wednesday as the club cut the recalcitrant wide receiver after having no luck finding a trading partner.

Armstrong, who turned in back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2007 and 2008 with the Bombers, ran afoul of the team last Thursday night in Edmonton when he refused to enter the game after being informed prior to kickoff that he would be used as a backup rather than a starter.

Upon the team’s return to Winnipeg, Armstrong got in more trouble with his comments to the media and eventually coach Mike Kelly banned him from practice and instructed his player personnel people to try and trade him.

When those efforts came up dry, the team decided on Wednesday to part company with the Texas native and give him his release.

The team has signed receivers Kyle Smith and Scott Mitchell to the practice roster this week.
