Bombers drop Wild

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Friday the release of veteran linebacker Ian Wild.

Wild played six seasons for the Bombers, playing in 67 games and recording 245 defensive tackles, 60 special-teams tackles, eight sacks, one interception and eight forced fumbles. The 28-year-old native of Pittsburgh, Pa., joined the team as a free agent prior to the 2013 regular season.

Wild was set to become a free agent Feb. 12.

“This has been another difficult decision, as Ian has been an integral part of our organization for many years, dating back to 2013,” Bombers general manager Kyle Walters said in a statement. “Through all those seasons, Ian was very productive for us and carried himself professionally, leading by his actions through both the good and the bad. We truly appreciate all he has given the organization.”

Wild was reported to be making close to $90,000 last season, a hefty price tag for a player that had been relegated primarily to a backup role, playing mostly special teams. With the Bombers still needing to sign 25 pending free agents, including raises for a number of them, it’s clear Wild was deemed expendable by the football club.

The Bombers also announced they have inked two players, signing a pair of imports in linebacker Jarnor Jones and offensive lineman Chauncey Briggs.
