A former star on the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team is turning pro.
Winnipeg native Justus Alleyn was drafted in the third round (16th overall) of the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s (CEBL) inaugural draft on the weekend by the Saskatchewan Rattlers.
Alleyn, a Bison from 2013-18, won the Canada West conference scoring title in his senior season as he averaged 24.1 points per game. In the 2016-17 season, Alleyn led the Herd in scoring with 17.4 points per game and was an integral part of the team qualifying for the national championships for the first time in three decades. The St. Paul’s High School graduate also won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The CEBL is a new six-team league that’s partnered with Canada Basketball. CEBL teams will play a 20-game regular season from May 9 to Aug. 15.
