NEW YORK – U.S. health officials say this year’s count of measles cases has surpassed 800, a growing tally that is already the nation’s highest in 25 years.

A total of 839 cases were reported as of last week. That’s the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the latest numbers Monday.

In all, 23 states have reported cases this year. The vast majority of illnesses have been in New York — most of them among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

That pattern continued last week, with most of the 75 new cases coming from New York.

Measles was once common in the U.S. but gradually became rare after vaccination campaigns that started in the 1960s.

Winnipeg police have ticketed a man accused of leaving his dog in his vehicle in a grocery store parking lot, then attacking bystanders who were concerned about the pet's welfare during the intense heat earlier this week.

Winnipeg Police Service patrol officers were called to the Safeway parking lot on the 600 block of Osborne Street at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday over the incident.

Police believe the man parked in the lot and left his German Shepherd in the vehicle to shop. Several bystanders gave the "thirsty, distressed" dog cold water through a crack in the window. The driver confronted them, then went back into the store. The bystanders continued to try to help the dog, as the temperature was about 30 C with a humidex value of 43 C.

The man then returned to his vehicle and was "belligerent" with the bystanders, before hitting one of them with his vehicle, reversing into a parked pickup truck and driving off at a high speed, police said.

“I opened the window after I woke up (around 6 a.m.) and the tree — oh my God,” Glover said. “I got my wife up and she couldn’t believe it. I was totally blown away. (Our neighbour) said the branch went right through the house into their living room.”

Glover was thankful his neighbours were not injured. Some of the tree’s outer branches clipped the corner of his home.

Nemat’s grandmothers were both Russian, and she was brought up in a Russian Orthodox Christian family in Tehran. With their Iranian husbands, whom they had married before the Russian Revolution of 1917, both grandmothers fled from Russia to Iran as part of a massive wave of migration.
