Valour ties Edmonton 0-0 in delayed match

Valour FC was eager to get their Canadian Premier League fall season started on Wednesday night, but mother nature had other plans.

Winnipeg’s professional soccer team, who finished the CPL’s spring season in last place with a 3-7-0 record, were scheduled to play their fall season opener against FC Edmonton last night at Clarke Field at 8 p.m.

But due to stormy weather and lightning in Edmonton, the match started nearly an hour late. The weather didn’t hold off for long, though, as after eight minutes of play, the teams had to go back into the locker room as lightning returned to the area. The match didn’t resume until 10:45 p.m. and the Valour fans who stayed up to watch the delayed game were left disappointed as OneSoccer — the league’s official streaming website — didn’t show the remainder of the game. OneSoccer announced on Twitter they were “unable” to show the rest of the match “due to the adverse weather conditions earlier this evening.” Fans were forced to follow by reading updates from FC Edmonton and Valour FC’s official Twitter accounts. And to make matters worse, the league’s website didn’t have any stats from the match, either.

But it turns out fans didn’t miss out on much, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw. It’s the first time in Valour’s young franchise history they’ve tied a match. With the draw, Edmonton is now 1-1-1 in the fall.

Valour will hope for a better result and weather on Saturday as they head to Hamilton to take on Forge FC (2-1-0) at 2:30 p.m.
