Canadian hopes ride on Ames at 3-under

OAKVILLE, Ont. — Although Mike Weir watched Friday — he did not get to start his second round after opening with 1-under 71 Thursday — Stephen Ames carried most of the Canadian hopes.

The 45-year-old Ames closed out his first round with a 3-under 69, and had moved to 7-under through 15 holes when play was stopped for the second time. That left Ames in an eight-way tie for ninth place with Retief Goosen and Scott Verplank, among others.

Chris Baryla, 3-under after the first round, remained on the right side of the projected 2-under cut without taking a shot of his second round.

Graham DeLaet was also at 3-under through 10 holes of his second round.

Aces wild

Holes-in-one seem to be a trend for the 2009 Canadian Open, with four golfers registering aces before the tournament’s second round was complete.

Joe Durant drained his tee shot on the 156-yard seventh hole en route to an opening-round 65 on Thursday. On Friday, Arjun Atwal and Briny Baird holed out on the par-3 15th, with both using eight irons from 132 yards.

Low cut

Should the projected cut of 2-under 142 hold up through the completion of the second round this morning, it will tie the lowest mark in Canadian Open history, set in 1989 at Glen Abbey.

Last year’s cut was 141, but that was 1-under par because the course was being played with a par score of 71.
