Mike takes on Milt
Former Bombers receiver turned TSN analyst Milt Stegall told his audience on the weekend that he didn’t consider Michael Bishop a long-term answer to the Blue Bombers’ quarterbacking situation.
Current Blue coach Mike Kelly didn’t hesitate to snap at Stegall, his former player, in order to protect Bishop, his current charge.
“Milt, Milt, Milt. He gets behind the microphone on the other side and look at him now,” scoffed Kelly, with a grin pasted across his face. “He needs to powder his nose and do what he’s supposed to do for the camera and we’ll make the decisions.”
Fitness formula
Michael Bishop had just four practice sessions under his belt before last Saturday’s 13-12 win over the Toronto Argonauts, and it began to show in his fitness midway through the game.
Bishop put up solid numbers in the first half, but as he tired, his productivity slipped.
“It’s a challenge and he has to work at it. He’s 15 pounds lighter than he was a year ago, so you’d think he could move around better than he did with all that extra weight,” said Bombers coach Mike Kelly. “But it’s a different world when you’re out there. Mike thought he was in pretty good shape and he got out there and he pretty much lost his lower body by the middle of the third quarter. How’s he going to get better? He has to play through it, which he did.”
Kelly was asked what Bishop could do to improve his fitness.
“It’s called training camp. He’s gone from the frying pan into the fire and right now he has no choice but to get himself ready to go. With each practice and game he’ll get better,” Kelly said.
